Man caught with a pipe bomb near a church playground was sentenced to jail

A New Mexico man who was found with a pipe bomb at a church playground has been sentenced to over four years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico announced on Friday that 41-year-old Nathan Wallace will serve four-and-a-half years in federal prison for possessing a destructive device and ammunition at a playground near East Mesa Baptist Church in Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Wallace was arrested by the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office in May 2023 after being spotted loitering at the church playground.

During questioning, Wallace admitted to carrying a metal pipe containing gunpowder, which was later confirmed to be a pipe bomb. “The device was seized by law enforcement and analyzed by a bomb technician, who found a fuse inside,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office stated.
