Peaceful Christian activists arrested in Paris

On August 5, Parisian police arrested six Christians who were travelling on a bus bearing the slogan "Stop attacks on Christians," as it circulated around Paris to protest against the portrayal of the Last Supper at the Olympic Games opening ceremony, which many viewed as anti-Christian.

CitizenGO, the organization behind the protest, had arranged for the bus to drive through the French capital, displaying the message prominently. This action was in response to a controversial Olympic Games opening act that featured a parody of the Last Supper involving drag queens, a lesbian character, and a transgender TV personality, which included a child in the performance, sparking widespread outrage.

According to CitizenGO, police abruptly stopped the bus, surrounded it at gunpoint, and arrested six members of the organization along with the driver. The arrests were reportedly based on accusations of organizing an unauthorized demonstration, though CitizenGO argued that simply driving a bus does not constitute a demonstration under French law and thus does not require prior authorization.

The arrested individuals were taken to a police station, handcuffed, and then transferred to another facility. The organization reported that their belongings were confiscated, they were subjected to strip searches, denied access to legal counsel, and some were even prevented from contacting their families.

Some of those detained claimed they were subjected to severe psychological pressure and threatened with extended imprisonment. They described spending the night in deplorable conditions, with some being deprived of food and water.

The detainees were released the following day after CitizenGO’s lawyer intervened. The prosecutor concluded that there were no grounds for charges, stating that the activists had committed no wrongdoing.

“It is impossible to constitute the crime of failing to notify a protest when there is no protest with just a single vehicle involved. The prosecutor pushed the law to its limits to stop the bus and curtail their free speech. Moreover, the procedure was irregular,” commented CitizenGO’s lawyer.
