Muslim politician uses Christian images as shooting range targets
Sanija Ameti, a Zurich municipal councillor of Bosnian Muslim background, shared photos on Instagram on September 7, showing herself at a shooting exercise where a reproduction of an image of Mary and Jesus had been used for target practice.
Ameti, a member of the Swiss Green Liberal Party and co-president of Operation Libero, explained that she needed “clearly visible motifs” for the exercise. The post sparked outrage among Christians across Europe and the U.S., leading Ameti to delete the post and issue an apology. She claimed she had only used the art catalogue at hand and hadn’t paid attention to the specific image.
The Green Liberal Party distanced itself from the incident, with its president asserting it was likely a “deliberate provocation.” Both the cantonal and national parties condemned the act. The image depicted the pierced heads of both Mary and the infant Jesus.
The Swiss Conference of Catholic Bishops also strongly criticized the incident, stating that, even beyond the religious significance of the image, its use demonstrated violence and disrespect towards human dignity.
