Several statues and plaques were vandalised in a Belgian cemetery

The cemetery encircling the Bovekerke Church in Koekelare suffered vandalism on March 16.

Roughly twelve statues, ornaments, flowers, and memorial plaques were vandalised, with affected graves scattered throughout the area, including some with long-standing concessions.

Hilda Bernard (78), the church caretaker, expressed shock and disbelief and questioned the motives behind such acts: “Who takes pleasure in this?”

Authorities are responding to the incident, with the municipality launching investigations and the police considering an increase in patrols to monitor the area closely.
