Bishop Salvador Rangel Mendoza, the retired bishop of Chilpancingo-Chilapa, Mexico, was reported missing on April 29. On the same day, the Mexican bishops’ conference said in a statement that he was hospitalized. He is in a hospital in the city of Cuernavaca, where he has lived since his retirement. The statement did not give information about the circumstances of his abduction or his current condition.

His case caused discontent in the whole of Mexico. The bishop is famous for fighting for peace in a violence-torn country. He often mediated between rival cartels and engaged in dialogue with drug cartel leaders, trying to stop the widespread violence with peaceful means.

In a previous interview, Bishop Rangel said,

“The goal is pacifying Guerrero. It’s a path, an option that is working: rapprochement and dialogue. And we are living in peace. There are no deaths.”

The local authorities are still investigating the kidnapping of Bishop Rangel.
