A new Marvel film faces backlash for mocking Jesus

Marvel's newest superhero film, Deadpool & Wolverine, was released over the weekend, and many moviegoers may suggest it's aimed more at adults than kids. Though the movie is dubbed as an action-adventure, comedy, and sci-fi/fantasy, it also has an "R" rating, and Christians find the movie's content to be more offensive than entertaining.

The Christian Post spotlights several social media influencers who have condemned the film as “a mockery” of Jesus or outright “blasphemous.”

One influencer, known as MJ, shared her thoughts in a YouTube video, expressing her initial enthusiasm for Marvel and her belief that the movie wouldn’t be particularly offensive.

However, after watching it, she stated, “I have never seen Marvel go this far in mocking Jesus. I don’t think Marvel has ever really mocked Jesus before,” noting that she watched many Marvel films before becoming a born-again Christian. She believes that, as a Christian now, she might notice things in older Marvel films that she previously overlooked.

MJ was particularly distressed by scenes where “Ryan Reynolds calls himself ‘the messiah’ and ‘Marvel Jesus’ throughout the film.” She also voiced her profound disappointment over a scene where “Hugh Jackman is crucified on a cross, clearly mocking Jesus’ sacrifice for all of us. The film ridicules His torment, suffering, and the shedding of His blood.”
