A church occupied by migrants for almost two months in Belgium

In the Belgian capital Brussels, at the call of pro-migrant and far-left organisations, the Beguinage church has been occupied by undocumented migrants for seven weeks.

“Their condition is currently critical. Each day without a solution brings them closer to death. This situation is dramatic”, notes the Archbishop of Brussels-Mechelen, Mgr Jozef De Kezel, in a press release.

The Belgian Primate says he understands “the dilemma facing politicians”. He nevertheless wishes to recall above all that, despite their illegal situation in our country, they are human beings: people in danger who call for our understanding and our compassion, ” the press release concluded.

On the 6th of July, the 200 or so migrants who occupy the Beguinage church banned the building for medical staff, treatment and any provision of water or food. However, the United Nations special rapporteur Olivier de Schutter, professor of law at UCL Louvain was able to enter the church on the 8th of July, and as a matter of fact made a tearful report on leaving, openly pleading for the regularization of migrants.
