Christian preacher receives £10,000 in damages from police over arrest
Hatun Tash has won £10,000 settlement after suffering unlawful imprisonment and humiliation from the police for wearing a Charlie Hebdo T-shirt and praying at Speakers’ Corner in London.
Miss Tash, a well-known Evangelist and the leader of the ministry Defend Christ Critique Islam, was arrested when preparing to preach at the Speaker’s Corner on the 26th of June 2022. She had a Quran with holes in it, which she intended to use as a prop to discuss how Islam has questionable methodology. A man suddenly grabbed the book and ran off with it. Her friends reported the incident to the police. When they arrived they dragged Miss Tash away from the premises. Muslim crowds laughed, mocked and assaulted Miss Tash as she was taken away. The police did nothing to stop the violent intimidation.
She was detained for 15 hours, suffering humiliating incidents, including a strip search and a 4-hour long interrogation. The police accused her of causing ‘criminal damage’ for wearing a Charlie Hebdo T-shirt that portrayed the prophet Muhammad.
The Christian Legal Centre supported Miss Tash to take legal action against the police. After more than two years, the Metropolitan Police agreed to pay Miss Tash a settlement fee for causing damages. Her lawyer stated: “We did not reasonably believe that Miss Tash was involved in the commission of a criminal offence, concerning the first incident it was clear that she had done nothing illegal and concerning the second incident, the officers believed that the easiest solution to the problem was ‘get rid of our client'”.
Miss Tash had also been stabbed at Speakers’ Corner, and received death-threats from terrorists. Instead of protecting her, the police supported the Muslim mobs.
Miss Tash said that authorities operate a “two-tiered policing” system and “Muslim mobs at Speakers’ Corner seemed to be above the law. I have been treated appallingly by the police and have been repeatedly humiliated when I had not done anything wrong. More must be done to properly deal with Islamic violence and intimidation at Speakers’ Corner. We don’t live in Pakistan; we don’t live in Saudi Arabia. I am Christian and by default I believe that Muhammad is a false prophet. I should be allowed to say that in the UK without being stabbed or repeatedly arrested. I am concerned that power has been handed over to Muslim mobs on Britain’s streets, and that there is no coming back from this. The British public urgently need and deserve better policing.”
She donated her settlement fee to a charity supporting persecuted converts from Islam.
