Christian teacher imprisoned for the third time over transgender dispute

Enoch Burke had been imprisoned twice already after refusing to use a transgender pupil's preferred pronoun.

Mr Burke dismissed the court order that requested him to stay away from Wilson’s Hospital School, where he had refused to use a transgender pupil’s “they” pronoun. Following his third arrest, a judge at the High Court in Dublin called for his imprisonment.

A court had barred Mr Burke from entering school premises in September 2022, after the school  had requested an order to keep him away. Mr Burke returned a few times, insisting that he was going to teach again. The police got involved and arrested him. After spending months in prison, they released him, but he was arrested again in 2023. Authorities warned him for the second time that he was not allowed to go back to school.

Mr Burke spent over 400 days in prison. Despite the harsh times, he insists that his religious beliefs are valid and he is ready to fight for his freedom of speech. He stated: “I teach everyone who’s in front of me. I teach every single student. But when I am commanded, when I’m told that I can’t have my religious belief anymore, when I’m told I have to confess belief in transgenderism, instead of my simple belief, which is male and female, that’s just a breach simply of my rights. Transgenderism is against my Christian belief. It is contrary to the scriptures, contrary to the ethos of the Church of Ireland and of my school. I love my school, with its motto Res Non Verba, actions not words, but I am here today because I said I would not call a boy a girl.”

The court is going to re-examine the case on the 11th of October.
