British episcopate convinced the government to close churches completely

In response to the appeal of the faithful to open churches at least for private prayer, Cardinal Vincent Nichols described such attitudes as "scandalous" and of "putting the people's life at risk". According to the American portal Life Site News, it was the British Episcopate that convinced the government to completely close the churches.

The British government plans to loosen the restrictions on public life gradually.  British Catholics asked the authorities not to “forget” about removing restrictions on churches —at least partially. Such a call, however, stirred the opposition of one of the most important voices of the Church in Great Britain, Cardinal Vincent Nichols.

“The restrictions still apply as part of a great effort to stop the deadly virus. This is a serious moral imperative. Going against these guidelines would be life-threatening and an act that would cause a scandal,” he wrote in a letter responding to the call of the faithful. “Please, remember that churches are closed because of government restrictions,” he emphasised.

According to the American portal Life Site News, the Cardinal did not mention that it was the British episcopate itself who persuaded the government to introduce such drastic restrictions on religious life.

Currently, churches are closed until further notice and there is no possibility of entering them, even for individual prayer, and – as the government of Boris Johnson points out – the restrictions imposed on the churches may last even until Christmas.
