Tajikistan: hefty fines for Bible translations

On February 20, 2020 the State Committee for Religious Affairs and the Regulation of Traditions, Ceremonies and Rituals sentenced the leaders of four Protestant churches in Tajikistan to heavy fines for using new translations in Tajik language during a ceremony of worship .

These new translations intended to make the old translation using archaic words and incomprehensible expressions more accessible to the Tajik speakers. They have been produced in the end of 2019 by the local company Linguatech specializing in the translation of religious texts.

Linguatech failed to warn State Committee for Religious Affairs and the Regulation of Traditions, Ceremonies and Rituals about what seems to fall under the law. The four Protestant churches were ordered to pay fines ranging from 7,000 to 11,000 somoni (637 and 1,001 €).

It is interesting to compare these amounts with the average product of the monthly quests in these churches, which is 500 somoni, and with the average salary in Tajikistan which is 1,500.
