Police were at the scene within 15 minutes of the report, including a dog unit, and quickly arrested two teenagers, aged 15 and 16, on suspicion of criminal damage and burglary.

Items believed to have been stolen from the church were also found and the two teenagers were questioned and released on police bail while  enquiries continue.

Adam Pipe, head of roads policing, said: “This kind of reckless offending requires this kind of swift response.”

This is the second time in a month that vandals have broken into the same church and caused damage. On October 29, vandals used a heavy stone birdbath as a “battering ram” to gain access to the church. Precious items inside the church, such as relics and stained-glass windows, were damaged. Outside, a grave was destroyed alongside iron gates.
