A Greek cemetery desecrated in Turkey

On August 24, staff at the Agios Eleftherios cemetery in Istanbul discovered that the barbed wire fence surrounding the cemetery had been cut, gravestones had been desecrated, holes had been dug, and the cemetery's guard dogs had been sedated.

The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate denounced the vandalism, labeling it a “deliberate act of desecration and hatred against the Greek Orthodox community” and a clear demonstration of “contempt for religious freedom.”

They also criticized the Turkish government for its inadequate response and failure to safeguard the “increasingly vulnerable position of religious minority communities in Turkey.”

The Greek Foreign Ministry has urged Turkish authorities to take decisive action in response to the severe vandalism at the Greek Orthodox cemetery of Agios Eleftherios in Istanbul.
