The sanctuary's renovation was realized with the support of Hungary through the Hungary Helps program.
During the Syrian civil war, the religious, educational, and community infrastructure also suffered serious damage. The also damaged National Sanctuary of Prophet Elijah holds special significance for local communities, carrying deep religious and cultural values. The renovation program was initiated by Joseph I Absi, the Melkite Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch. The sanctuary’s renovation was realized with the support of Hungary through the Hungary Helps program, with CEO Péter Kovács participating in the official handover.
Locals believe that Prophet Elijah stayed here when he was in Syria between 850 and 800 BC. Annually, numerous visitors come here irrespective of denomination, seeking experiences, livelihood, and healing. Alongside protecting cultural heritage, the Hungary Helps program has also taken steps to restart religious tourism, thereby assisting the situation of both the Christian and Muslim populations of Rableh town.
