Singaporean priest stabbed during mass
A Singaporean priest was attacked during a sermon in the church. A man wielding a knife stabbed the priest by the altar before he was disarmed and handed over to the police. The priest survived the attack and is currently in the hospital undergoing treatment.
A 37-year-old Singaporean man with an extensive list of previous offenses attacked a Catholic priest, Fr. Christopher Lee, during Sunday Mass. The attacker approached Fr. Lee during the sermon at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in the Bukit Timah district of Singapore and stabbed him with a knife. The knife-wielding man was disarmed by congregation members and, upon their arrival, handed to the police.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the police believe that the man is not connected to any extremist or terrorist group and acted alone. They do not handle the case as an act of terrorism. Singapore’s Inter-Religious Organization and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong condemned the attack. The prime minister commented on the incident, urging Singaporeans to work towards harmony.
“I am very shocked and saddened to hear that a priest, Father Christopher Lee, was stabbed at St. Joseph’s Church during Mass. We pray for his full and speedy recovery. Most of all, we must uphold the safety and sanctity of our places of worship, places where people seek peace, solace, and community.”
He wrote on social media. Singaporeans, especially Catholics, are shocked by the incident. Singapore is one of the safest cities in the world, and these kinds of incidents are extremely rare.
