Filipino Jesuits rescued thirty-five newborns from a burning hospital

Filipino Jesuits risked their lives to save thirty-five newborns from a burning hospital in Manila. "Regardless of their own safety, with zero visibility, they pulled out babies left in a thick smoke," wrote Fr. Marito Ocon on social media.
The clergyman noted that it took the firefighters four hours to control the fire. “If my confreres had not entered the burning wing of the hospital, these children would not have been saved. They stayed there until all patients were safe,” the priest added.
At first, the Jesuits did not know what to do with the rescued children. One of them had the idea to take them to the chapel near the hospital. Thus, the place of prayer became a temporary maternity ward and an evacuation centre.
Twenty-seven newborns were in a serious condition after being transferred to the chapel. On the spot, the doctors tried to provide them with the necessary help. The necessary equipment was quickly delivered to the chapel, including respirators, as some children needed oxygen because of the smoke entering their lungs.
After the situation was brought under control, several children were transferred to other nearby hospitals. Two more infants remained in the makeshift infirmary for two days following the fire. Their transfer to the hospital was complicated because of sanitary restrictions. “Our doctors and nurses are great. All patients of the hospital, including the youngest, those saved by the Jesuits, survived the fire,” wrote Fr. Ocon
