Bishops of Asia elect their new leader
Cardinal Ferrão of Goa was elected as president, Bishop David of Kalookan as vice president, and Archbishop Kikuchi of Tokyo was re-elected as secretary general.
On February 22, the Central Committee of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC) held a meeting in Bangkok to elect its new president. The FABC includes 16 bishop conferences and some individual dioceses from Asia. The federation was established in 1970 with the approval of Pope Paul VI.
During the meeting in Bangkok, the Central Committee elected its president, Cardinal Filipe Neri António Sebastião do Rosário Ferrão, Archbishop of Goa and Daman. It has also elected Bishop Pablo Virgilio David of Kalookan as vice president. Archbishop Tarcisio Isao Kikuchi of Tokyo was re-elected as secretary general.
Cardinal Ferrão is the third Indian prelate to lead the Central Committee of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences. All the newly elected leaders will take office in January 2025.
