Four-hundred-year-old church burned in Mexico

The four-hundred-year-old church is in bad conditions and only the walls remain standing.

The Saint Jacques de Nurio Church, in the State of Michoacan, Mexico, known for its exceptional baroque decorations from the 17th century, was destroyed by fire during mass on the 7th of March.

The church was called the “Sistine Chapel of the Purepechá Plateau” by local inhabitants. It was in bad condition already before the fire, awaiting some restoration work, delayed by the health crisis and budget cuts.

Through the centuries, the church has already experienced other smaller fires. Now, only the walls remain standing, very weakened by the blaze.
