The Holy Week celebrations have already been canceled in Sevilla

The Seville authorities have cancelled the Holy Week celebrations in the city scheduled for the turn of March and April. Juan Espadas, the mayor of the Andalusian capital, explained that the decision was dictated by the high epidemic threat in the city and the entire province.

He noted that organising such mass events as pilgrimages and processions during this spring is “out of the question” due to the still high risk of coronavirus infections.

The authorities of the Archdiocese of Seville also do not envisage organising Holy Week celebrations for the faithful, which are traditionally accompanied by mass processions along the streets of the city.

In a release issued, the local Metropolitan Archbishop Juan José Asenjo announced that he had decided to cancel this year’s Holy Week events organised by parishes, fraternities, associations and groups of believers that would be “held in public spaces”.
