Violence against Christians “reached its peak” in Mexico, say a report
Violence against Christians in Mexico has reached its "peak" as religious leaders faced targeted killings and assaults while hundreds of Catholics faced threats and extortion in the last six years, according to a new report.
A report released this week by the Catholic Multimedia Centre (CCM), in collaboration with the UK-based watchdog Christian Solidarity Worldwide, reveals that nearly 900 individuals linked to Roman Catholic Church ministries were subjected to extortion or threats between 2018 and 2024. Additionally, 26 religious buildings were attacked during this period.
Under the administration of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018–2024), 10 Roman Catholic priests and one seminary student were murdered.
The report also highlights that seven bishops and seven other priests survived violent attacks during his tenure. Another priest was murdered after Claudia Sheinbaum assumed the presidency in October.
