The stability of the Sahel belt is in the interest of Europe
"The stability of the Sahel region is in the interest of both Hungary and Europe!" - announced Tristan Azbej, the State Secretary responsible for programs aiding persecuted Christians at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, on Saturday, about his two-day visit to the region with László Eduárd Máthé, the Ministerial Commissioner for Hungarian activities in the Sub-Saharan region.
Tristan Azbej, speaking from Niamey, the capital of Niger, jointly with László Eduárd Máthé, stated: “Europe’s security starts in the Sahel region, and we need a dialogue with Niger.”
Máthé pointed out that recent decisions have created a situation that indirectly endangers the security of Hungary and directly threatens the security of the European Union.
“If we do not understand how the neighbors of our neighbors think, our entire neighborhood will be in danger, so we must start a dialogue with the government of Niger,” emphasized László Eduárd Máthé.
The ministerial commissioner announced that on behalf of Hungary, he has restarted negotiations focusing on illegal migration through the Sahel region and the terror threat with the foreign minister of Niger. On the second day of the visit, they met with the country’s foreign minister and continued their work with their Chadian friends. He expressed hope that they would soon be able to welcome the foreign minister of Chad in Budapest.
