Nominee bishop attacked and shot in South Sudan

“Appointed bishop of the Rumbek diocese in South Sudan, Fr. Christian Carlassare, was attacked on Sunday night and injured by several shots from a firearm, "ACI Stampa reported.

The bishop-elect is undergoing initial treatment at a health centre in the diocese of South Sudan. His condition is stable. “Our bishop, who was appointed just over a month ago, was wounded in an ambush yesterday evening,” Fr. Andrea Osman. He added that the bombers had deliberately targeted the newly appointed religious leader. After the shots were fired, they fled.

Fr. Osman noted that he was in a room next to the bishop’s room at the time of the incident. “When they saw me, they told me to leave. One of them fired two bullets,” he reported.

Bishop Christian Carlassare was ordained a priest in September of 2004. After an English language course, he went to South Sudan, where he has been working in the pastoral ministry since 2006. In March, Pope Francis appointed him Bishop of the Rumbek Diocese. His episcopal ordination was scheduled for Pentecost Sunday.
