U.S. Embassy in Indonesia warns of potential terrorist attacks
On the 7th of April, the U.S. Embassy in Indonesia issued a security alert for American citizens, asking them to maintain increased security awareness. The warning came after the suicide bombing of the 28th of March at the Makassar Cathedral and the terrorist attack at the Indonesian National Police (INP) headquarters which took place three days later.
According to the alert, Indonesian authorities warn that the terrorism threat level remains high. The INP may visibly increase its presence at Indonesian government buildings, tourist sites, churches, malls, and other venues. The U.S. Embassy advises heightened personal security awareness, particularly in public areas.
The Embassy also asks American citizens to exercise additional vigilance especially in crowded streets, shopping areas, places of worship, and locations with large crowds. They should also avoid demonstrations and large gatherings.
The two terror attacks and the arrest of nearly one hundred suspects in recent weeks are evidence that terrorism remains a concern for Jakarta. The pro-Islamic State cells and lone wolves, though not as powerful as they used to be.
According to The Australian, Muhammad Syauqillah, head of University of Indonesia’s terrorism studies program, said many terrorists believed they would receive religious rewards twofold if they carried out an attack in the holy month of Ramadan.
