Hundreds of thousands of people displaced due to conflict in Mozambique
The ongoing conflict in Northern Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado region has left more than 300,000 people displaced. According to the World Food Programme, these 300,000 people are in dire need of food, water and shelter.
The terror group causing all of these problems is locally known as al-Shabab but has no link to the Somali group of the same name. They are very likely affiliated with ISIS who has a group based out of the Democratic Republic of Congo and has claimed responsibility for some of the attacks.
These insurgents were able to take control of the city of Mocimboa da Praia in Cabo Delgado for nearly six full weeks. Mocimboa da Praia is an important port city in the country’s oil rich northern region. With a massive sixty-billion-dollar oil deal underway, some have claimed that this group is only trying to get money and power from the deal.
However, with the new Islamic State Central African Province claiming the attacks, this conflict could become much more religious in nature.
