Sudanese rebel group signs peace agreement with Sudanese government
The main rebel group in Sudan just signed a peace agreement with the new government of the country. This agreement is aimed at ending the continuous fight between these two entities that has been ongoing for the last seventeen years.
Many of the crimes committed during this long period of time have been placed at the feet of the former president of Sudan, Omar al-Bashir, who was toppled from his thirty-year reign in 2019. Bashir is still in custody and awaiting the end of trials for these crimes.
If this peace agreement can hold, it could mean safety and security for hundreds of thousands of people in Darfur, South Kardofan, and the Blue Nile states of Southern Sudan.
There is indeed a hint of hope for Sudan to enter into a new era of peace and freedom after almost two decades of continuous violence and suffering.
