“Muhammad” remains most given newborn male name in the England and Wales

The most common name given to boys in 2019 in England and Wales was Muhammad. Six thousand one hundred sixty-three newborns were called that way last year in these two countries of the UK.

 

Information on this matter was provided by the British Office for National Statistics. The second most common name given to boys was Oliver, which was given to 4,932 newborns.

Muhammad has been the most given male baby name for newborns in England and Wales as of 2016. According to the ONS, this has to do with the ever-increasing number of Muslims living in Britain.

Among girls, the most popular name in 2019 was Olivia, which was given to 4,082 newborns. Amelia came second and Isla third.
