Prosecutor sues media for unlawful hunt against Cardinal George Pell in Australia

In Australia, nineteen journalists and twenty one media agencies were sued by the government for "violating order" in connection with the trial of Cardinal George Pell who was accused in 2018 of sexual harassment of minors. The Australian prelate was acquitted in April this year.

Australian authorities declare that the unlawful and unjustified media harassment of the cardinal as a “violation of the obligation to remain silent” before issuing the final verdict of the trial.

One of the commentators compared the hunt against Cardinal Pell to “throwing stones at a building made of glass” having in mind the damage to image suffered not only by the cardinal, but also by the Catholic Church he represented.

According to Victoria state prosecutors, where the trial took place, the Australian media “incited and urged aggressive behaviour based on foreign reports.”

According to Reuters, the defendants include journalists from the Nine Entertainment Co. and News Corporation.

In Australia, “breaking the obligation to remain silent” is punishable by imprisonment of up to five years and high fines. The trial will start in July.
