French restrictions on the Church have violated the principle of proportionality
The French Council of State (Conseil d'État) ruled that the restrictions imposed on churches during the coronavirus pandemic were disproportionate to the threat and violated the principles of freedom of religious worship. The government has eight days to relax the restrictions.
In France, participation in public religious gatherings was forbidden for eight weeks. The new regulations, introduced on the 11th of May, loosened restrictions in many areas of social and economic life, but churches were once again omitted.
On the 18th of May, the French State Council – the highest administrative judicial authority, ruled that “a general and absolute ban on religious gatherings is disproportionate (…) and therefore a serious and obvious violation of freedom of religion.”
There is currently a limit of ten people allowed to gather in other public places.
