Belgian hospitals practising euthanasia cannot call themselves “Catholic”

The Belgian Congregation of the Brothers of Mercy decided to leave their fifteen psychiatric hospitals after the decision of the Congregation ordering these institutions to stop using the name "Catholic" because they consented to kill patients by so-called euthanasia.
The decision states that “psychiatric hospitals managed by the Provincial Office of the Association of Brothers of Mercy in Belgium will no longer be considered Catholic institutions”.
Now the Superior General of the Brothers of Mercy, Br. René Stockman declared that the religious Congregation is leaving its psychiatric centres in Belgium. He added that this is a painful decision because the assembly belongs to pioneers in the field of psychiatric care in Belgium.
The Vatican’s decision ends a three-year dispute between the Brothers of Mercy and the corporation that manages its hospitals in Belgium. In 2017, the board of this secular association decided to allow euthanasia in its hospitals. The religious protested, but it wasn’t enough.
The head of the association that manages the corporation is former Belgian Prime Minister and former President of the European Council Herman van Rompuy, a politician of the so-called Christian Democrats. It must be added, however, that two out of three religious brothers on the board also supported the decision on euthanasia. The intervention of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith puts an end to this scandalous practice and deprives the right to define such facilities as “Catholic”.
