Less than twenty percent of Spaniards are practicing Catholics, says new poll

Less than two-thirds of Spaniards consider themselves Catholic according to a poll conducted during March and April by the Centre for Sociological Research (CIS) in Madrid. Membership of the Catholic Church was declared by only 61.2 per cent of the country's inhabitants.
The survey, carried out by the state, based its results on a sample of three thousand randomly selected people living in all the autonomous communities of Spain.
19.5 per cent of the respondents described themselves as “practising Catholics”, and 41.7% as “non-practising Catholics.” Other participants surveyed described themselves as: “atheists” – 13.5 per cent, “indifferent—unbelievers” – 11.5 per cent, “agnostics” – 11.1 per cent and 1.8 per cent classified themselves as a “non-Catholic believer.” 0.9 per cent had no opinion or did not answer. CIS indicates that in March 2020, Spain saw a 5.4 per cent drop in the number of Catholics.
The downward trend in the number of people declaring themselves as Catholics has been increasing in Spain since 2005. Back then, nearly 80 per cent of the inhabitants of the country were considered to be Catholics.
