French Evangelists accused of spreading Covid-19
On the 9th of March the French magazine Le Point accused an evangelical pastor of spreading the coronavirus in eastern France. The accusation referred to the evangelical gathering of the church of La Porte Ouverte in Mulhouse between the 17th and 21st of February which brought together around 2,000 evangelical Christians from all over France to pray and fast.
Gatherings of more than 5,000 people were not prohibited until the 29th of February 2020 , or one week after the gathering of the Evangelicals had ended. Consequently, the organisers of the gathering did not break any safety rule.
However, on March 17th, Josiane Chevalier, prefect of the eastern district of Bas-Rhin stated that the epidemic is “part of an evangelical gathering (…) for which we are now paying a high price for not taking basic measures into account.”
But what measures is she talking about? As Nathalie Schnoebelen, head of communications at La Porte Ouverte immediately noted: “During the week of the rally, Emmanuel Macron was present in the city of Mulhouse with many people around him without practising barrier gestures.” The French President also participated in the Paris Agricultural Show on the 21st of February where he was surrounded by countless people.
