Laos: Protestant pastor arrested during worship
On Sunday the 15th of March, at 7:00 am, one of the main church leaders of the Bru tribe, whose group was praying in the forest, was kidnapped by four armed policemen. He was captured in the village of Tangwai, in the district of Sonbury, in the province of Savannakhet.
The pastor was taken to the governor’s office and it still remains unclear what has happened to him. The police and the governor had demanded several times that this group of Bru believers cease to meet, but they continued their Sunday services in the forest. Their number has grown rapidly to reach its current number of a few hundred faithful from twelve different villages.
The Laos Communist government recognizes only three Christian denominations: the Evangelical Church in Laos, the Seventh-day Adventist Church and the Catholic Church.
