Nigeria: 12,000 Christians killed since 2015

The Fides Agency has just published information compiled by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law. The figures reported by Fides show that the situation of Christians in Nigeria has worsened considerably since the coming to power of Muslim President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

In Nigeria, twenty religious people including at least eight priests and some seminarians have been killed in the past fifty-seven months, and no less than fifty others have been kidnapped. This tragedy has been denounced in a report by the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, a Nigerian NGO.

The report states that “since June 2015, when the current central government of Nigeria took office, between 11,500 and 12,000 Christians have been killed. 7,400 of them have been murdered by shepherds [Fulani], 4,000 by Boko Haram and 150 to 200 other criminal groups.

The report further specifies that the majority of the victims of the Boko Haram attacks, also known as ISWAP (Islamic State in West Africa) in the north-east of the country, are Christians.
