China’s alliance with Iran could worsen Christian persecution in both countries

The US-based group International Christian Concern (ICC) warns that China’s recent affirmation of strong ties with Iran may heighten the risk of Christian persecution in both countries.
This concern follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks at the BRICS summit, where he underscored China’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with Iran, regardless of international or regional pressures, according to Xinhua.
ICC points out that both China and Iran are designated by the US Department of State as “Countries of Particular Concern” due to serious religious freedom violations. ICC’s statement to The Christian Post notes that China’s continued support for Iran may embolden both countries in suppressing Christian communities, as each nation has shown a tendency to limit Christian religious practices.
New religious measures introduced in China on the 1st of September, requiring clergy to incorporate socialist values into their teachings and pledge loyalty to the Chinese Communist Party, add to these concerns. Held in Russia, the BRICS summit brought together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and additional nations, including Iran, where these pledges were reaffirmed.
