Italy: police cut short a Mass in the district of Cerveteri in Rome

On Sunday the 15th of March 2020, the police intervened in the Church of San Francisco de Asís de Cerveteri (province of Rome) while a Mass was being celebrated and streamed on social media.

In Italy, the celebration of Sunday Masses with the faithful present has been forbidden by a government decree effective from the 8th of March. The episcopal conference promulgated the decision. This decree establishes that “civil and religious ceremonies, including funeral ceremonies, are suspended.” On the 11th of March, to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, a further decree was passed extending the measures until the 3rd of April.

It would be inaccurate to say that the celebration was interrupted. It was however,  cut short at the request of the police. The consecration had already taken place as well as the distribution of Holy Communion.
