Donald Trump declares Sunday March 15, 2020 National Day of Prayer
The annual National Prayer Day was to be held in the United States on May 7, but the state of emergency announced due to the coronavirus pandemic influenced the decision of the US president. In a Twitter post, Donald Trump declared Sunday March 15 National Day of Prayer.
He recalled that throughout history Americans turned themselves to God in order to face this kind of crisis situations. “It is my great honor to declare Sunday, March 15th as a National Day of Prayer. We are a Country that, throughout our history, has looked to God for protection and strength in times like these…,” Trump wrote on Twitter.
The history of the American National Prayer Day dates back to the early years of the United States, and was formalized in 1952 by President Harry Truman. The law states that every year, every US President must sign a declaration encouraging citizens to pray.
The National Prayer Day traditionally takes place on the first Thursday of May, but in exceptional situations – like this year – it is organized on another date.
