France: Manche basilica subjected to acts of vandalism

It was around 4 pm on Sunday March 8, 2020 that the damage was discovered in the Saint-Gervais basilica in Avranches by the sacristan, Louis Revert. The basilica is part of the parish of Saint-Aubert d'Avranches (diocese of Coutances).

“There was no desecration, it was vandalism,” commented local priest Alain Le Marinel. Part of the marble altar in the sanctuary was damaged. The criminals used one of the six candle holder on the altar as an implement. The vandals also destroyed a statue of Saint Andrew. The Mayor was on site on Sunday the 8th of March, 2020 to inspect the damages. City officials announced that they will fix the altar and the candle holder before the end of the month.

French churches are regularly the object of attack. Even if the purpose of most of these offences doesn’t seem to be profanation or blasphemy, it shows that places of worship remain an easy target for robbers of all kinds.
