Asia Bibi is still being threatened by Pakistani Islamists

" These are the words of Pakistani Christian Asia Bibi, who spent almost 10 years in prison, wrongly accused of blasphemy against Mohammed. Thanks to the commitment of the international community, she managed break free and has been living with her family in Canada for almost a year.

 

Asia Bibi will meet with President Emmanuel Macron on Friday, February 28, 2020. The brave Christian comes to France to present the premiere of her book “Free at last.” She wrote it together with journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet, whom she calls “her angel”, because she fought to free her from jail.

“I intend to ask for political asylum in France. Canada has pledged to help us for a year, I am very grateful to this country,” explains Bibi, who is still receiving threats from Islamic fundamentalists. The Elysée Palace stated that France had been working hard from the very beginning to free her and cooperated with Canada in this direction.

“France is ready to welcome Asia Bibi and her family, if that is her wish,” confirmed the presidential office. “I appeal to President Macron to respond positively and quickly to Asia Bibi’s request. It would be an honor for France,” Republican Senator Bruno Retaileau wrote on Twitter.

In an interview with the newspaper La Croix, Asia Bibi confessed that she would like to be able to work side-by-side with journalist Anne-Isabelle Tollet, for people suffering in her homeland because of the unfair blasphemy law. She has already interceded for Shagufa Kousar, whom she met while in prison in Multan, and whose legal assistance began to be provided by her lawyer Saif Ul Malook.

“I think Islam must change so that no one will ever have to spend ten years in prison again for alleged blasphemy. No one can be sentenced to prison without a serious investigation, ” Bibi emphasized, expressing her hope that at least her children will one day be able to return to Pakistan.
