When the bus driver refused to stop the bus, the angry militants shot at the bus’s tires in an attempt to make it stop. Instead of stopping the bus however, the random gunfire killed several passengers on board the bus and injured several others, including the driver

Though it is unclear why the terrorists wanted to stop the bus, it is likely that they would have separated all passengers by ethnicity and religion and would have killed the non-local Christians.

According to ICC, the Somali based terror group is trying to punish the Kenyan people for their countries involvement in the ongoing strife in Somalia. Kenya has been one of the biggest supporters of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

This is a coalition of regional forces who are trying to stop al-Shabaab from achieving a Caliphate and dominance in Somalia. The terrorist group mainly attacks along the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera, Garrisa, Wajir, and Lamu counties. Mander and Lamu are particularly affected as they have large portions of border that are not well secured.
