Balázs Orbán told Hungarian News Agency (MTI) that he paid a three-day visit to the Central African country, a key partner of Hungary on the continent.

As he explained, Uganda is the third largest country in terms of accepting refugees, currently there are less than 1.4 million people seeking shelter because of armed conflicts, epidemics, political and economical instability.

„As one of the safest countries in the region, Uganda is trying to make the best effort to cope with the situation properly and provides incentives to refugees to return their home countries after the crisis seem to be solved”, the Deputy Minister said, adding that Uganda is an excellent partner of the Hungary Helps program.

„The goal of this initiative is to support the idea of not bringing the problem to Hungary, but of taking assistance to where the trouble is”, Balázs Orbán said.

With relation to the details, the state secretary explained that Hungary is going to realize a USD 17 million aid development program in Uganda which aims to help the living standards of thousands of people. Among others, the program finances the drinking water supply of refugees and the modernization of migration and asylum system, including cyber defense capabilities.

During the visit, Balázs Orbán held talks with Ecweru Musa, Minister of State for Migration and Crisis Management, Oryem Okello Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and General Ely Tumwine, Minister of Security.
