Christians forced to convert to Islam in Sudan

According to an advocacy group, Christians in Sudan find themselves trapped between two warring factions, with each side accusing them of supporting the other.

In the state of Gezira, southeast of Khartoum, Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militants in the village of Al Thora Mobe have reportedly been pressuring Christians to convert to Islam. The RSF accuses those attempting to escape of siding with the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF), Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) reported.

The village, near Wad Madani, has been under RSF control since December. “The RSF has surrounded the area and accuses anyone trying to flee of supporting the SAF,” CSW stated, citing local sources. “Those who manage to escape face arrest by military intelligence, similar to members of the Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC) detained in Shendi.”

In Shendi, River Nile state, SAF military intelligence recently arrested 26 men, mostly Christians, on suspicion of supporting the RSF. Fourteen were released between Oct. 12 and 13, but 12 remain in detention, CSW said.

“Many of those detained are members of the Sudanese Church of Christ in Khartoum North, who fled the city with their families as fighting between SAF and RSF intensified,” the CSW report added. They were among 100 SCOC members who sought refuge in Shendi in October.
