Iranian man converted to Christianity sentenced to three years to jail

Ismaeil, 65, is an Iranian converted to Christianity. He was arrested in Shiraz on January 25, 2019 for "propaganda against the state and insulting Iranian sacred institutions".
Other audiences followed in November in December and then in January of this year.
Ismaeil had sent a text message from his phone that was deemed insulting to Iranian clerics in power. This earned him three years in prison. This judgment is being appealed but has yet to be tried on two other counts: “propaganda against the Islamic Republic” and “membership of an organization hostile to the regime”.
The NGO Article 18 considers the sentence disproportionate given the trivial nature of the text message, but rather sees it as a disguised condemnation for having abandoned Islam and having converted to Christianity.
