Spanish government wants to legalize euthanasia
The Spanish government, which is now composed of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and the radical leftist bloc, Unidas Podemos (UP), passed a bill to the parliament on the legalization of euthanasia. This is the first thing the cabinet sworn in on January 14, 2020.
The draftdocument was presented by Adrian Lastra, head of the parliamentary fraction of socialists in the Congress of Deputies, the lower chamber of the Cortes General.
In her opinion, the government project “is “a document awaited by many people in Spain.” She reminded that this is the third attempt to legalize euthanasia in this country. The project suggests that euthanasia would be funded by the state and carried out in both public and private hospitals. It would concern people with “chronically and terminally ill whose suffering cannot be alleviated”.
According to the government’s draft to carry out the so-called assisted death would require patient consent. According to the document, the basis for legalizing euthanasia would be “the patient’s right to a dignified death”.The legalization of euthanasia is one of the main points of the coalition agreement concluded between PSOE and UP after the parliamentary elections of November 10, 2019, won by the socialists.
The authorities of opposition groups – the center-right People’s Party (PP) and the conservative Vox, respectively the second and third forces in the Congress of Deputies – have already announced a vote against the draft about assisted death.
