Vatican diplomat shows support for sovereignist governments from Central Europe

In an interview given to the Italian media in August 2019, Archbishop Celestino Migliore notes that today it is very fashionable to discriminate against governments, as well as nations themselves, calling them pro-European or sovereign. Of course, pejorative significance is given to sovereignism.

The new Nuncio to France reminds us that sovereignty is not an attitude that only applies to countries such as Poland or Hungary. It also manifests itself in Brexit, in the attitude of the ruling parties in Austria and Italy, as well as among the increasingly stronger movements and parties in France, Germany, the Netherlands and Denmark.

Although its causes are complex and although there are no deviations, it is in the sovereignty of Central and Eastern European countries that legitimate aspirations for their own model of democracy are manifested.

“The countries of Central and Eastern Europe just want to feel equal members of the European club, without having to undergo cultural uniformity again”, stated Archbishop Migliore.

The papal diplomat also cited the analyzes of Dominique Wolton, who as early as 1993, claimed that the creative intuitions of the founding fathers of the European Union were quickly taken over by the growing apparatus of European bureaucrats who lost contact with citizens.
