Another French church burns; the third one in the last two months
On Easter Sunday, the 21st of April, hardly a week after the burning of the Notre Dame Cathedral of Paris, and a month after the burning of the Church of Saint Sulpice in France, a church in the village of Eyguières caught fire. Fortunately, nobody was injured in the blaze, and the fire was extinguished before the entire building was destroyed.
The incident was discovered by a neighbour, who noticed flames coming out from the windows of the church. Single-handed, the valiant man, fought the fire until the arrival of 25 firefighters who eventually managed to quench the blaze.
At the time, there were only a few people in the village, because many had travelled to visit their relatives during the Easter holidays. The church was empty when the fire started, so no one was injured.
Local police have commenced an investigation into the cause of the fire, but at this point, forensic experts have yet to identify what started the blaze.
They do know however that the fire began in a wooden confessional situated to the right of the altar. The confession box was destroyed, as was a large area of the eighteenth-century church.
The situation of Catholic churches in France is becoming more and more disturbing. Besides these three fire incidents over the last two months, there are reports of daily attacks aimed at desecrating Christian churches in the whole country.
