A sculpture of a crucified McDonald’s clown is exhibited in Israel
On Friday, the 11th of January, hundreds of Christians demonstrated in front of the Museum of Modern Arts of Haïfa, Israel, protesting about the exhibition of a piece of art entitled “Mc Jesus” that depicts a crucified Ronald McDonald
The people who participated in the manifestation tried to break into the museum to remove the blasphemous piece of artwork but were restrained by police.
The sculpture, Mc Jesus, depicts Ronald, the red and yellow clown of McDonald’s, crucified on a wooden cross. The Finnish artist, Jani Leinonen made the statue for an exposition, called “Sacred Goods.” The theme of the exposition was the sanctification of the goods of consumerism.
The Minister of Culture, Miri Regev, has written a letter to the general director of the museum asking him to remove the controversial statue. In her letter, she mentioned the numerous complaints that she had received concerning the piece of art. The minister added that the crucified Ronald McDonald offended the religious feelings of many visitors and as the State supports the institution, they do not have the right to exhibit pieces of art that have not been approved by the government.
The Directorate of the museum refused to comply with the request but agreed to put up a sign at the entrance to the exposition warning people that the sculpture, while attempting to ridicule consumerism, might offend some people’s religious feelings.
