Syrian Christians are in serious danger while Islamist militias take over Aleppo

Christians in Aleppo are facing “grave danger” after Islamist militias, including jihadist groups, seized control of the city, local church leaders report. The militias took over following the withdrawal of government forces and have begun removing all Christmas decorations, according to a report.

Maronite Archbishop of Aleppo, Joseph Tobji, described the situation as being in a state of “limbo” after a sudden offensive by armed groups, as reported by Agenzia Fides.

“Life had returned to normal; the situation was calm. But now everything is shut down,” said Archbishop Tobji. He noted that shops and bakeries have closed, and residents are unprepared with supplies due to the lack of warning before the attacks.

“Nobody warned us,” he added. While Christian targets have not yet been attacked, uncertainty hangs over the future. The militias have reportedly shared evidence of their takeover on social media.

Fr. Hugo Alaniz of the Institute of the Incarnate Word stated that nearly all of Aleppo is now under militia control. Religious leaders continue visiting parishes to provide support, but many residents, including students and the elderly, have relocated to safer areas of the city. Fr. Hugo noted that while their church remains open, the situation remains precarious.
