Indian bishops condemn governor’s speech
Bishops of Tamil Nadu condemned the speech of the state governor of Tamil Nadu because of its offensive elements. The bishops said that the governor's speech was divisive, offensive towards Christians, and undermined Indian unity.
The Tamil Nadu Bishops’ Council (TNBC) and the Tamil Latin Rite Bishops Nadu Council (TNLBC) released a statement condemning Tamil Nadu Governor R. N. Ravi’s speech. The bishops condemned the state governor for the offensive, historically inaccurate, and divisive elements of his speech. The governor gave a speech at the 50th anniversary of the Mylapore Education Group in Chennai, praising the institution for its contribution to the development of India but at the same time slandering the work of missionaries under British rule.
According to the TNBC, the governor’s speech was offensive, historically inaccurate, and was a blunt attempt to create diversion and spread false propaganda against Christians. Archbishop George Anthonysamy of Mylapore said:
“Governor Ravi’s speech was not only hateful but a clear attempt to incite communal tensions.”
He added that Christians are the integral part of India, and they too work for the development of the country. He also called out the state governor to stop using hateful language and stop inciting diversion and hate among the people.
