Medical students kidnapped on their way to Catholic conference
Along the highway, 18 medical students were abducted on their way to a Catholic conference. Both the police and university staff confirmed the kidnapping.
On August 15, university students were abducted along the Otukpo-Enugu highway in Benue state, Nigeria. Overall, 18 students were kidnapped, 12 from the University of Jos (UNIJOS) and six from the University of Maidiguri (UNIMAID). The medical students were on their way to Enugu State University of Technology to attend a conference organized by the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students.
“Yes, the report of the kidnapping is true. It was received between 5:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., and an investigation is ongoing.”
SP Catherine Anene, Benue State Police Command spokeswoman, confirmed the incident and stated that the investigation has already started. The vice chancellor of UNIJOS also confirmed the kidnapping of their students.
Kidnapping is not a rare phenomenon in Nigeria, especially in the case of students or members of the clergy. This case is another example of the abduction wave that spreads through the country.
