Myanmar junta takes over Cathedral
In the conflict torn Myanmar, the military junta occupied Christ the King Cathedral in Loikaw, forcing the bishop to flee.
On Monday about 50 soldiers occupied the complex, including the cathedral, a clinic, pastoral center, clergy house and the bishop’s residence. Bishop Celso Ba Shwe of Loikaw blames the junta, that soldiers took over the cathedral, using it as shield in their fight against resistance forces.
According a church source, the junta uses the cathedral as a shield because they assume that the resistance forces will not harm the religious space. This incident takes place in Kayah, Myanmar’s smallest state with a population about 300,000 from which, about 45% are Christians.
